Do you have a ride in your local area that is simply a MUST DO? Do you want to share it with the world for the chance to win $100? The popular cycling blog Ride-Strong is currently hosting a competition for the best ride that is mapped online using www.RoadBikeRides.com.
I recently wrote a post about mapping your rides online and the RoadBikeRides tool is comparatively very good. I particularly like the way the elevation is displayed, and the ride descriptions are well organised. You also have the opportunity of adding photo’s and videos.
If you do enter the competition, please add the route URL to a comment below so other readers can check it out.
Now although RoadBikeRides has an emphasis on rides in America, I thought what better place to gain inspiration than from the Giro d’Italia which is currently in week one of a three week race. One of my favourite rides is the Sella Ronda Loop which is located in the part of the Italian Alps known as the Dolomites.
This route features 4 mountains passes, with 6900ft of climbing over a distance of 40 miles. It is quite a leg-burner but is set against some of the best scenery you can imagine.
The Giro d’Italia will be cycling through this area on stage 15 (May 25th) where they will ride over one of the 4 climbs from this route, the Passo Pordoi.

This is ride that I’ll be doing in July and I’m considering it a ride of a lifetime. Start on the Col du Lauteret, over the Galibier to the Col de la Croix de Fer, and finally Alpe d’Huez.

All on the day before le Tour rolls through - can’t wait.
ps: nice site - much cleaner than mapmyride.com, but a little more buggy too.

The ride looks fantastic. I will be in the same area at some point in July as part of a longer tour and hope to do some of these climbs. Haven’t decided which yet and will also depend on what makes sense as a good through route.
